Éco-Collège Immaculée des Coteaux (E.C.I.C.)
Where Students Learn, Grow, and Lead with Purpose
Éco-Collège Immaculée des Coteaux (ECIC) is a model rural school established by Pennies for Haiti to provide high-quality, inclusive education in one of Haiti’s most underserved regions. Located in the mountainous town of Coteaux, the school serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, demonstrating that excellence in education is possible even in the most remote communities when compassion, structure, and innovation come together.
Founded with the vision to offer more than just academic instruction, ECIC delivers a holistic, community-centered approach to education that integrates national curriculum standards with hands-on learning, environmental responsibility, digital literacy, and social-emotional development. The school serves students from preschool through secondary levels and provides a nurturing space where learning is deeply rooted in both Haitian culture and forward-thinking practices.
At ECIC, the classroom extends far beyond four walls. Students are engaged in school gardens, solar energy projects, health and hygiene programs, and basic STEM activities, all designed to prepare them for real-world problem-solving and responsible citizenship. The school’s eco-conscious model emphasizes sustainability, with initiatives that teach students to care for the environment while learning how to care for themselves and their communities.
The school’s faculty is made up of dedicated educators who are trained not only to teach but to mentor. ECIC prioritizes teacher development and ongoing pedagogical support, ensuring that instruction remains student-centered and responsive to the evolving needs of the local population. Parents are also actively involved, reinforcing the belief that education is a shared responsibility between the school and the community.
As a cornerstone of Pennies for Haiti’s education programming, ECIC is more than a school—it is a living example of how consistent investment in rural education can create lasting change, elevate families, and empower youth to dream bigger. Its impact is not limited to academic performance; it fosters a generation of students who are confident, conscious, and committed to rebuilding Haiti from within.
With its strong foundation and community buy-in, Éco-Collège Immaculée des Coteaux stands as a replicable model for transforming rural education across Haiti—showing that with vision and support, even the most isolated corners of the country can become centers of learning, innovation, and opportunity.
